How do you apply epoxy grout for a clean finish?
Practical guide · Tiamont
Applying epoxy grout: precision begins long before the first joint.
Epoxy grout gives high-quality surfaces dense, colour-stable joints that are easy to maintain. The result can convey a sense of calm for decades. Getting there, however, requires a different approach from cementitious grout: exact mixing, controlled working sections, clean water, plenty of fresh sponges and a skilled installer who recognises the right moment.
How do you apply epoxy grout correctly?
Components A and B must be mixed completely, slowly and uniformly in the specified ratio. The grout is then worked diagonally into clean, dry joints over the entire area using a suitable rubber grout float. Clean the surface while the material is still fresh. Prepare a white pad or felt, suitable sponges, two water containers and a constant supply of fresh, cool water.
High temperatures shorten the working time. Even so, never add water to the mixed grout. In warm conditions, smaller factory-proportioned packs, short working sections, shade and a well-coordinated team help.
Why an experienced installer is so important when applying epoxy grout
A tiler may be highly skilled with cementitious grout and still decline to use epoxy grout. That does not indicate poor craftsmanship. It shows that the two materials demand different routines. With a two-component epoxy system, elapsed time, temperature and the cleaning window all matter as soon as mixing begins.
An experienced installer knows more than how to spread the mixture. They recognise when the material is ready for the first wash, how firmly to emulsify it with the pad, how to keep the joints full and when to replace a sponge saturated with resin. They organise the surface so that no section is larger than the team can safely grout and clean.
This experience is particularly valuable in high-quality bathrooms, spa areas, pool surroundings, natural stone installations and demanding surfaces. A durable premium project requires more than choosing a high-quality material. Its application must meet the same standard.
Important advice for clients
Do not just ask whether a contractor grouts tiles. Ask expressly whether the team doing the work has already used your chosen epoxy grout. Experience with cementitious joints alone does not replace experience with reaction resin.
Why many tradespeople initially find epoxy grout challenging
Switching from cementitious to epoxy grout changes more than the material. It changes the entire workflow. That explains why even experienced tilers approach their first epoxy grout installation with caution.
Cementitious grout
- Hardens hydraulically with water.
- The familiar consistency is easier to assess.
- Washing time and subsequent shaping follow familiar routines.
- Tools and sponges are usually familiar.
- Depending on the product, residue is often less stubborn.
Epoxy grout
- Cures through the irreversible reaction of resin and hardener.
- The mixing ratio must remain exact.
- Temperature and the quantity of material in the bucket affect the working window.
- Application and cleaning must be closely coordinated.
- An overlooked resin film may later appear as a dull or sticky haze.
It is this combination of chemistry, time pressure, occupational protection and surface inspection that makes epoxy challenging for inexperienced installers. The material is manageable, but it leaves less room for improvised decisions.
Starlike Pro: how a high-quality system helps with demanding projects
In an exclusive bathroom or a surface exposed to sustained use, grout plays a central role. It connects every individual element and remains visible for years. Litokol Starlike Pro was developed as a decorative epoxy gel to meet precisely this quality standard.
The current technical data sheet specifies a working time of more than 90 minutes under standard conditions. The creamy gel consistency and formulation designed for cleaning offer more breathing room than systems with a much shorter working window. This does not permit slow working, but it is a real advantage for carefully planned premium projects.
Starlike Pro is impermeable to water, stain-repellent, UV-resistant and intended for areas with demanding hygiene requirements. Its strengths become apparent wherever design and technical performance matter equally.
Explore Starlike ProMore time does not mean unlimited time
Manufacturer's figures are measured under defined standard conditions. A warm substrate, direct sunlight, draughts and a large quantity of reacting material can shorten the practical working window. Site conditions therefore always play a part.
Prepare all tools, water and protective equipment
Once components A and B are combined, there is no time left to search for a clean sponge. A professional epoxy grout installation therefore starts with a fully prepared workspace.
Mixing
A low-speed electric mixer, a suitable mixing paddle and a clean spatula for scraping the sides and base of the container.
Application
An abrasion-resistant rubber grout float, small spatulas for edges, a clean working surface and clearly defined sections.
Initial cleaning
A white pad or felt, suitable sponges, a sponge float, a rubber squeegee and several clean cloths.
Water
At least two containers, plenty of fresh, cool water and a safe way to change and collect the wash water.
Inspection
A strong work light directed from the side for grazing light, a clock or timer, a clean test area and documented batches.
Protection
Suitable chemical-resistant gloves according to the safety data sheet, safety goggles, long work clothing and a clean changing area.
Occupational protection deserves full attention
BG BAU points out that epoxy resins are common causes of occupational allergic skin disease. Skin contact must be avoided. Ordinary leather gloves or gloves offering only mechanical protection are unsuitable for chemical protection. The current safety data sheet and gloves specifically designated for this purpose are decisive.
Applying epoxy grout: step by step
The following instructions describe the established basic method for two-component epoxy grouts. The technical data sheet for the product actually used always takes precedence.
Test the material and surface on a small area
Polished, textured, porous or sensitive surfaces can differ greatly in how easily they clean. Prepare a small, inconspicuous test area. Assess grout colour, cleanability and any possible visual changes fully, including after curing.
Prepare clean, dry joints with a uniform depth
Joints must be free of dust, grease, residual water and hardened bedding mortar. The tile adhesive must have hardened sufficiently. Unevenly filled joint cavities affect material consumption, joint appearance and curing.
Define the working section and each person's role
Before mixing, determine the area that can safely be grouted and cleaned completely. On larger surfaces, ideally one person applies the grout while another immediately emulsifies and cleans it. No one leaves their section before the surface has been checked.
Mix components A and B completely
Add all the hardener to the base component. Mix with a low-speed electric mixer; for Starlike Pro, Litokol specifies approximately 300 revolutions per minute. Scrape the sides and base of the bucket with a spatula until the mixture is creamy, uniform and free of lumps.
Fill the joints completely, working diagonally
Work the grout into the joints diagonally with a suitable rubber grout float. Fill the joint cavity throughout its depth. Remove excess material from the surface with a diagonal pass, keeping the float as clean as possible.
Emulsify the surface while the material is fresh
Moisten the area with clean water and loosen the surface resin film using a white pad or felt in circular movements. Emulsify the material without hollowing out the joints. This step prepares the surface for a clean final wash.
Shape and clean with a clean sponge
Make the second pass with a suitable damp sponge. Form a smooth, compact joint surface and remove all the emulsion from the tiles. Rinse the sponge frequently and change the water regularly.
Check for remaining haze under grazing light
Inspect each completed section on the same working day with a lamp directed from the side. Look for dull areas, rainbow reflections, sticky patches and differences in water run-off. Remove any detected residue within the window specified by the manufacturer.
Protect the surface during curing
Keep foot traffic off the freshly grouted surface and protect it from dust, direct sunlight, strong draughts and condensation. Litokol specifies that Starlike Pro is ready for foot traffic after 24 hours, full service after 5 days and swimming-pool use after 7 days.
Carry out subsequent cleaning systematically
For Starlike Pro residue after approximately 24 hours and no later than 48 hours, Litokol specifies Starlike Care on floors and Starlike Wall Care on walls. Starlike Care Pro is intended for more stubborn residue after several days. Older, highly polymerised residue may require Starlike Remover.
Plan temperature, heat and pack size correctly
High temperatures accelerate the reaction between resin and hardener. Warm room air is not the only reason the mixture sets faster. A warm substrate, direct sunlight, warm components and reaction heat in the bucket also shorten the available working time.
| Product | Permitted application temperature | Working time under standard conditions | Ready for foot traffic | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Litokol Starlike Pro | +10 °C to +30 °C | More than 90 minutes | After approximately 24 hours | High temperatures shorten these times. Do not apply if temperatures below +10 °C are expected within 24 hours. |
| PCI Durapox Premium | +10 °C to +25 °C at the substrate | Approximately 45 minutes | After approximately 16 hours | Higher temperatures shorten the stated times; lower temperatures extend them. |
| Mapei Kerapoxy Easy Design | +12 °C to +30 °C | Approximately 45 minutes | After approximately 24 hours | The technical data sheet and current site conditions determine the workflow. |
The figures come from the respective technical data sheets. They cannot be transferred from one product to another. Temperature limits, mixing method and cleaning windows for the chosen system are binding.
A practical plan for warm days
Store components in the shade and within the storage requirements. Do not leave them in an overheated vehicle or direct sunlight. Account for warm tiles and underfloor heating in good time.
Ask about smaller, factory-proportioned packs if they are available for the product and colour. A small original pack provides breathing room without risking the mixing ratio through improvised division.
Work on only as much area as can safely be grouted and cleaned. As temperatures rise, reduce the working section. A second experienced installer provides additional assurance.
Have cool fresh water, several sponges, pads and cloths ready before mixing. No working step should be delayed by a missing tool.
Water does not solve a temperature problem in the bucket
Never add water, cleaner, methylated spirits or other liquids to the mixed epoxy material unless the technical data sheet expressly requires it. Water is provided for surface cleaning. It is not a permitted way to change the pot life of the reacting mixture.
Why plenty of fresh water and sponges matter
There should be plenty of fresh, cool water available on site. On the surface itself, however, use water in a controlled way and, depending on the system, as sparingly as possible. Frequent water changes resolve the apparent contradiction: a little clean water on the surface, with plenty of clean water in reserve.
Working water for the pad and first sponge
Rinse the felt, pad and more heavily contaminated sponge here. Change the water as soon as it is visibly loaded with resin. Never use this container for the final pass.
Clean water for the final wash
Keep this container as clean as possible. A fresh sponge removes the final emulsion. Litokol expressly recommends two bowls of water and replacing felt or sponges as soon as they are saturated with resin.
- Do not use hot water. PCI expressly states this for Durapox Premium.
- Rinse sponges frequently and replace them in good time.
- Do not simply pour wash water into the drains. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and local disposal requirements.
- After the surface dries, inspect it under grazing light on the same day.
- Clean tools immediately. Hardened material often requires mechanical removal.
Removing epoxy haze: floors and walls require different cleaners
A thin epoxy haze may be invisible immediately after work and later attract dust or change the gloss of the surface. For Starlike Pro, subsequent cleaning is designed as a coordinated system. Different viscosities are available for horizontal and vertical surfaces.
Starlike Care
The lower viscosity is designed for horizontal surfaces. The technical data sheet specifies use on sufficiently cured grout, normally after approximately 24 hours at +20 °C to +25 °C. Apply undiluted, leave for 10 to 15 minutes, assist mechanically, remove, rinse with clean water and wipe dry.

Starlike® Wall Care
The gel consistency adheres to vertical surfaces and runs off more slowly, keeping the cleaning action controlled. For epoxy residue, this data sheet also specifies use on sufficiently cured grout, a contact time of 10 to 15 minutes, rinsing with clean water and complete drying.
View Starlike Wall Care at TiamontThe right level of treatment
After approximately 24 to 48 hours: Starlike Care for floors or Starlike Wall Care for walls. After several days, for stubborn residue: Starlike Care Pro. For older, heavily cured residue: Starlike Remover according to the technical data sheet. Before each cleaning treatment, prepare a test area and check material compatibility.
The most common mistakes when applying epoxy grout
This changes the mixing ratio. Sections may remain soft, cure unevenly or lose their technical resistance. Use only factory-proportioned units.
Epoxy resin is not adjusted with water like cementitious grout. Foreign substances change the system and are expressly excluded in the manufacturer's instructions.
The first square metres can still be grouted while cleaning is already falling behind. Material, temperature and team size determine the section size.
Resin is spread again. The result initially looks clean, but haze appears later. Two water containers and frequent changes prevent this cycle.
A resin-loaded sponge becomes a tool for spreading residue. Replace worn-out sponges and pads instead of keeping them until the end of the day.
Thin resin film remains invisible. A movable lamp providing grazing light reveals dull areas and reflections in good time.
The working window shrinks. Pack size, working section, team and water arrangements must be adapted before mixing.
Foot traffic, exposure to water and chemical cleaning have different release times. The product's technical data sheet is decisive.
How to identify an installer with real epoxy experience
Clear answers to the following questions are more valuable than a general assurance. A good contractor explains the workflow calmly and specifically.
- Which epoxy grout has the team carrying out the work used before?
- How many comparable projects have been completed with this system?
- Will a complete test area, including cleaning, be prepared beforehand?
- How will ambient and substrate temperatures be checked on the working day?
- What section size is planned, and how many people will work at the same time?
- Which pads, sponges, water containers and cleaners will be ready before mixing?
- How will the surface be checked for remaining haze under grazing light?
- Who will perform any necessary subsequent cleaning within the manufacturer's window?
A professional refusal can be a sign of quality
If a tradesperson openly says they do not routinely apply epoxy grout, that is more honest and safer than experimenting on a high-quality surface. Ask for a specialist colleague, or assign the grouting separately to an experienced team.
Frequently asked questions about applying epoxy grout
Can every tiler apply epoxy grout?
Basic trade skills are important but insufficient on their own. Epoxy requires experience with two-component systems, exact mixing, short working sections, the right washing time and complete haze inspection. Ask expressly for references using the chosen product.
Why does epoxy grout cure faster in warm conditions?
After mixing, resin and hardener react chemically. Higher temperatures accelerate this cross-linking. In addition, the reacting mixture in the bucket may generate heat. That is why working sections are smaller in warm conditions and the entire cleaning setup is prepared in advance.
Can water be added to epoxy grout?
No, unless the technical data sheet states an express exception. For the systems considered here, the mixed grout must not be diluted with water or other liquids. Water is used to clean the fresh surface.
Should smaller packs be used in hot conditions?
Smaller, factory-proportioned packs can be useful in warm conditions and for small teams because less reacting material has to be worked at once. This requires the manufacturer to offer a smaller unit for the product and colour. Components must not be divided by eye.
Why are so many sponges and so much fresh water needed?
During washing, the sponge takes up an emulsion of water and resin. If the sponge is saturated or the water heavily contaminated, resin is spread back onto the surface. Several fresh sponges, two water containers and frequent water changes reduce the risk of haze appearing later.
When should epoxy haze be removed with a specialist cleaner?
That depends on the grout and cleaner. For Starlike Pro residue after approximately 24 hours and no later than 48 hours, Litokol specifies Starlike Care on floors and Starlike Wall Care on walls. Starlike Care Pro is intended for stubborn residue that is several days old. The relevant data sheet and a test area are mandatory.
Can hardened epoxy grout still be removed?
Fresh residue is much easier to remove within the specified cleaning window. After complete curing, stronger chemical treatment or mechanical removal is often necessary. This may damage the surface. That is why inspection on the working day matters so much.
Does epoxy grout also provide waterproofing?
No. A joint impermeable to water does not replace the required bonded waterproofing beneath the covering or the elastic treatment of movement, corner and connection joints. Planning and installation must account for the entire waterproofing system.
Why is Starlike Pro worthwhile for high-quality projects?
Starlike Pro combines a documented working time of more than 90 minutes with a creamy gel consistency, high colour quality, water impermeability, stain resistance and a coordinated cleaning system. This combination is particularly interesting when joint appearance, hygiene and long-term performance matter equally.
