System approach

Litokol grout and waterproofing systems for demanding projects

A tiled surface that convinces in the long term is the result of several coordinated work steps. Depending on the project, these include preparing the substrate, the right waterproofing, a suitable tile adhesive, the grout, elastic connections, and proper cleaning and later care.

Litokol covers these steps with different product systems. A shower has different requirements than a pool, and a transparent glass mosaic may need a different adhesive and grout than porcelain stoneware or natural stone. What matters is therefore not a single product, but the technical coordination of the entire build‑up.

Reactive grout systems

Epoxy grout for bathrooms, showers, pools and mosaics

Epoxy grout is based on a reactive binder system and therefore differs fundamentally from conventional cement‑based grout. This technique can be particularly interesting for areas with high moisture exposure, demanding colour design or increased requirements for stain resistance and care.

Starlike® Pro as epoxy grout is intended for numerous ceramic coverings, mosaics, natural stone, porcelain stoneware and applications in bathrooms, spas and pools. For transparent or backlit glass, Starlike® Crystal for glass mosaic offers a translucent alternative. This allows the epoxy grout to interact more strongly with the adjacent material in terms of design.

01

Bathroom & shower

In wet areas, grout, elastic connection and waterproofing must be planned as separate functions. For waterproofing, Litokol SafetyGel® is available, for example. For ceramic connection joints, Pixel® 3D silicone completes the system, and on natural stone the neutral‑curing Pixel® 3D‑N.

02

Pool & spa

Permanent water exposure calls for a careful selection of waterproofing, adhesive, grout and elastic connections. Starlike® Pro is intended for swimming pool applications. HydroPixel® complements the range as an elastic hybrid sealant for suitable connections; we clarify waterproofing and details for each project.

03

Mosaic & natural stone

With mosaics and natural stone, colour, light and the effect of the material play a special role alongside technical suitability. Starlike® Crystal was developed for demanding glass mosaic surfaces. Matching SICIS® glass mosaics are also available at Tiamont.

04

Cleaning & care

Cleaning is an integral part of working with reactive grout systems. Matched cleaners are available for remaining epoxy haze and residues. Starlike® Care is part of this cleaning system. Further products are used for later care, impregnation and surface treatment.

Technical guidance

Frequently asked questions about Litokol grouts, waterproofing and installation

What is epoxy grout?

Epoxy grout is a reactive, usually two‑component grout based on epoxy resin. Systems such as Starlike® Pro are used for durable, water‑resistant and stain‑resistant joints. Suitability, joint width and substrate must match the respective product data sheet.

What is the difference between Starlike® Pro and conventional grout?

Starlike® Pro cures reactively on an epoxy basis, whereas conventional grout is often cement‑based. This results in differences in water absorption, stain resistance, chemical resistance, application and cleaning, among other things. According to the product data, Starlike® Pro is intended for joints from 1 to 20 mm and for numerous applications in bathrooms, pools, mosaics, natural stone and porcelain stoneware.

Which grout is suitable for glass mosaic?

Starlike® Pro is an option for many glass mosaics. For transparent, artistic or backlit glass mosaic, Starlike® Crystal is particularly interesting as a translucent epoxy grout for joints up to 3 mm – translucent, not crystal clear. For visually demanding surfaces, a sample area is recommended before large‑scale application, also for choosing a white adhesive.

Which grout is suitable for pools and showers?

According to the product data, Starlike® Pro is intended for wet areas and swimming pools. Starlike® Crystal can be used in suitable mosaic projects if a translucent joint effect is also desired. Waterproofing and tile adhesive are separate components of the system build‑up and must be chosen to suit the substrate and water exposure.

How do you remove epoxy residues after grouting?

Fresh joints are cleaned immediately with the white Starlike® felt and the Sweepex sponge. For remaining fresh and light epoxy haze, Starlike® Care is recommended on floors and Starlike® Wall Care on walls. For cured or stubborn residues, Starlike® Care Pro follows; for old, polymerised residues, Starlike® Remover should only be used after consulting customer service. Check material compatibility before every application.

Why are elastic silicone joints needed despite epoxy grout?

Rigid tile joints cannot absorb movements at connections, transitions and structural movement joints. Such areas are therefore made elastic according to the planning. Pixel® 3D is available in 20 colours matched to Starlike® Pro, is acetic curing and therefore not suitable for marble and natural stone. There, the neutral‑curing, transparent Pixel® 3D‑N is used; HydroPixel® completes the system as an elastic hybrid sealant for suitable connections.

Which waterproofing is suitable under tiles in wet areas?

For bathrooms, showers and damp rooms, SafetyGel®, HydroPad® (also as Fast and SuperFast) and the HydroProof waterproofing membrane offer alternative build‑ups; HydroPad® Indoor is intended exclusively for indoor rooms. For pools and basins, we clarify waterproofing and details for each project. The technical data sheet and the complete system build‑up are decisive.

Which Litokol products are needed for a complete installation system?

Depending on the project, a complete build‑up can include substrate preparation, adhesion improvement, waterproofing, tile adhesive, grout, elastic sealant as well as cleaning and surface care. Which components are actually required depends on the covering, substrate, format, moisture and stress. The application area filter shows suitable products but does not replace a project check.

How does the outdoor temperature affect grouting a pool?

High temperatures and direct sunlight can shorten the working time of the grout and accelerate curing. In warm weather, the area should therefore be shaded or covered; the cooler early hours of the day are also advisable.
